OK, I’ve stolen part of the quote by Sarah J Maas, an American fantasy author. The full quote is “Libraries were full of ideas – perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.” How true that is! After all it was said by Edward Bulwer-Lytton that “the pen is mightier than the sword.” There are several other quotes about books and ideas and libraries and their power, which you can find for yourself. It just goes to show how important libraries are. They are the custodians of ideas, of thought, of learning, of entertainment, of enjoyment and of community. How powerful is that!
I have always belonged to a library, well as far back as I can remember anyway. It is one of the first memberships I seek out when I move to a new location. At this present moment, I belong to three libraries and I actively borrow from all of them, either in person or eBooks online. As a child my mother used to take me once a week to our local library and I would return home with an armful of books which I couldn’t wait to devour. Reading was so important to me.
Libraries are also important to authors. It is through libraries that our books can be found and read by many more people than we can reach on our own. There are authors and books which I had never heard of until I found them on a library shelf.
Many libraries allow their members to request purchases of books for their catalogue. The libraries I belong to have links on their websites where you can suggest a title or an author which they can purchase. I’ve made a few requests over the years and have usually had a positive response.
If you are a member of a library and are able to make a request for an addition to their catalogue, I would really appreciate it if you requested Upheaval, (2nd edition). You just have to give the library the title, name of author and the ISBN which you can find by clicking on the plus sign next to “Paperback” or “eBook” on this website. Thank you so much!
Note: I was going to go to my local library to take a picture but the smoke haze over the city meant I had to stay indoors. My heart goes out to all those in Victoria who are experiencing the horrific fires. So, the photo above was taken from “Library Bookshelf” by Open Grid Scheduler / Grid Engine is marked with CC0 1.0. The image of Upheaval is mine.
